virtual band album……

March 21, 2009

well it seems amazon.com beat itunes to the punch in posting the album”Mcboy”….good to know… they seem to be very competitive…..itunes had better look over their shoulder methinks….and now….the album……here is a synopsis of the tracks from my track order:

( 1. )Do That:  …lyrics and sung by british singer Steve Craig…a singer who sounds eerily like David Bowie….a dead ringer…the lyrics had many wondering if Steve was singing about a love affair or having a  philosophical commentary on life….only Steve knows…and he might tell….i used the John Mayer technique of keeping the drumming simple….a nice flowing time….Andrew Kopr locks down the groove on bass….rhythm guitars had a figure that i asked Steve  to mimic…and thus..”cannot ..Do That …shall not …Do That”…..an eighth note figure is played by both the guitar and the voice…the guitar solos are played first by me and then Gary Wooten… it is a two guitar solo format that we use through many of the tracks on the album….the song ends with an exchange betyween me on guitar and Steve  as the song fades…..

(2.)  The Signs: lyrics and sung by Antoinette Symonette…. a soulful bluesy rocker of a track….Antoinette rocks it!….she leads the song off with the chorus instead of a verse…..a womans view of a relationship going south…Gary takes the first guitar solo…very melodic and very soulful….i respond with a herky jerky contrasting solo…..Antoinette brings it back to a simmering heat….

(3.) Princess: lyrics and sung by Tom G…. a red hot chili peppers type track….Tom’s vocals are the sails on this ship….a love story by any other name…..the track starts off in one tempo but then shoots forward to a faster tempo for the bridge/solo section…..Gary plays a mean biting lead during this section…the song slows down again and Tom takes us out…..

(4.) Heroes: lyrics and sung by Adam Clarke…one of my favorite singers around the planet…Adam sings in a soulful way….and spins a small story that is open to interpretation……….. i believe… and so do others… that this song would make a great soundtrack to an Ironman or X-men movie…the song mixes acoustic guitar and electric guitar(wah, fuzz and distortion)into a folksy alt-rocker….i had fun doing and playing on this track….Adam navigates it well and really is the glue that holds it all together…..you rock Adam.!

(5.) Come On Baby: lyrics and sung by Mike Ables….the soul rock submission to the album…Mike sings a classic soul verse and chorus song..echos of Barry White…a sexy love song enveloped with guitars on all sides…reverse guitar…octave riffs..metal riffs..acoustic riffs… i played another of my persona solos’s.. a blusey shout out……then Mike takes it out with some soulful adlib vocals.. a duet with himself…amen brother…!

(6.) Slingers: fun instrumental track featuring Gary Wooten on lead right channel..Erwin Colon on lead left channel…Mcboy Lead on center channel….its a jam session ..plain and simple…..after some interplay by Erwin,Gary and i …the fun begins…..i lead off with my improvisation….followed by a blistering improv by Gary..followed by me on bass…and then the drummer gets some love….back to the interplay sections and a wicked burning outro….ouch…

7.)Slingers Brew: instrumental dedicated to Jimi Hendrix….this track uses electronica elements by way of synthesizers and traditional hardrock playing….i went for a fun happy guitar line for the verse…with some standard rock riffs on the left channel and a funky guitar line on the right channel augmented by a synth line that comes in and out….then  the fun begins…Gary takes us on a trip as Jimi would say…he weaves in and out of the rhythm guitars and takes us to parts unknown and elsewhere…..i follow up and got into my Jimi zone and just let it pour out..rover moved over and let Jimi take over…..hehhe…i thought i was channeling Jimi….and hope he is smiling wherever he is…our bass man Andrew Kopr keeps everything locked in throughout and then brings a change of pace for his improv…he simmers to a grooving boiling point..and then brings us back to the verse and out…

(8.)Mudsinging: instrumental…a metal like track with jazz like improv…well….everything counts….what can i tell you…its a flat out fun jam session with Andre Kopr on bass and Gary Wooten on lead guitar and Steve jackson on drum solo and drum programming…Gary plays some really kool lines on both the verse sections and then i come in for some lead playing fun…..followed by Gary burning up the house….we then have some trading fours between Andrew,me and Gary….and end with a super drum solo by Steve…..much fun….

(9.) Drews Soul-Fle: instrumental…this is Andrew Kopr’s composition…..a funky track with drum programming by Dave Thomas….Andrew gave us lots of space to freely do what we wanted….and free we were….free to try out different tones…rhythms….and scalar approaches to soloing….i went up first and played what i felt to the bass lines…no preconceived ideas….one take…..Andrew then takes an improvised bridge section leading to Gary’s improvisation…then a section where Andrew plays a composed progression and I accompany…..Gary and i then do a duet leading to the outro. ..a bass interlude…..

“everything counts”….wheeeeeew…..

another leg…..

March 14, 2009

another leg in the journey to have the virtual band’s music available worldwide has been hurdled…..it has finally been uploaded to tunecore….within 2-3 weeks it should be on itunes…amazon..rhapsody…etc….so many last minute tweaks have delayed the upload that i finally screamed relief when the last mix ,a remix o of the intrumental  “Slingers” (my first internet collaboration with guitarist gary wooten and guitarist “scorpjammer” aka erwin colon), was finally done…wheeew….i added a bass solo and removed a guitar solo to give the track some balance…it still retains all the energy and excitement of the original with the added twist of being mastered with the plugin “Ozone 3”, giving it a new sheen and sound…..the goal of the album besides collaborating with players residing in different parts, was to see and hear what could be done outside the traditional studio environment…..i have been enlightened and delighted at the evolution of home based studios…it has been a learning experience all the way….

everything counts….

February 24, 2009

here i am ..ill with the flu….but i just finished a recording session with a local gospel n R n B singer mike ables….he graciously wrote the lyrics and allowed me to add it to the upcoming album….the track is a little bit of a departure for the band…..but then….everything counts is our motto….mike sings in a classic r n b style…deep tenor….very soulful….the music is a r n b/rock/blues mutation……i had no idea how it would turn out….the verses have a distinct contemporary soul drum beat and bass line..with added reverse guitars and octave guitar riffs…the chorus sections then add metal like guitar riffs and funky bassline….mike navigates the changes quite nicely….the guitar solos are in the blues and rock arena stylistically with the rhythm guitars playing syncopated metal like figures and the bass line playing funky lines but much freer and loose…..mike ends the track with some really kool and soulful gospel vocal ad libs….i really like the track…its a fusion of soul/rock and blues with contemporary beats…..i was hesitant at first thinking it would not jibe into the over all feel and concept of the album…but hey i changed my mind…..so far the vocal tracks encompass david bowie like stylings, a red hot chili peppers rocker, and alt-rock/r n b rocker, a contemporary rocker, an inxs type alt-rock/acoustic romp..and finally this last track with mike ables..the other tracks are instrumental jam tracks..three in total…..that brings the total music to over 50 minutes…..time to prepare for upload to itunes and other download sites…..the countdown is on…one…two..three………….

bass player extraordinaire….

November 14, 2008

bass player extraordinaire……yes….i like the way that sounds…and describes our real/virtual band member, andrew kopr, most appropriately…..like guitarist gary wooten ,our other member of the band, we met online at a musicians hangout….we collaborated a couple of times on some tracks and i became  a fan of his playing as i got into his music and style…..he is a versatile rock/jazz/funk meister with incredible feel for the music…….he complains about his playing chops/practice time…..and …i wonder ….what is he talking about …he just breezed through the tracks…sounding great…funky lines….fluid playing……brrrrrr…..makes me scared to hear him when he feels like he is up to snuff…hehhehhehhe….he is also a fine composer….he submitted a track for the album, that was mighty funky and tasty..gary and i  had a blast playing our parts…..much fun indeed…..drew’s lines were funky, tight and his solo spot marvelous….there was a pretty interesting interlude with a hip chord progression that i just loved playing over….the mans got it together………he is an attorney in atlanta…but maybe we can get him to quit his day job if the album goes platinum…hehhehhehhe………here is an example of some of his melodic playing on one of the albums tracks….Drew

WORK…..WORK…WORK….

November 1, 2008

well the fun has been had…..the playing, composing, collaborating……..now….its….time…for ….work……now its time to mix and master all these wonderful tracks…….i just spent a whole week mixing and mastering the vocal track with antoinette……i added some new rhythm guitars to her verses…added some compressors on her vocal tracks, some vocal effects….even tho i’m undecided on some of them..the vocal doubler effect versus having her actually double her voice….etc…etc…i’ll play it by ear……i really enjoyed the guitar solos …gary did the first solo and i followed up with a contrasting response…..gary is such a melodic player that the only way i find to respond to his solos’s is to play rhythmic interplays with the bass ,drums and rhythm guitars….the contrast works  quite nicely in my humble opinion……k….now its back to work….work….work……

band member……

October 25, 2008

hmmm……what should i write about today.????…….how about one of these mysterious virtual band members…..yeah……how about a guitar player i once knew only as z293….a member of macjams a musicians community found at http://www.macjams.com….its changed a lot this website..but when i used to frequent the place it was brimming with great musicians and musical ideas….alot of them have gone and replaced by others who i am not to familiar with….i met z293 aka….gary wooten….when he commented on a musical post i made and i reciprocated and listened to his stuff….i liked his playing….i invited him to collaborate on a track to post on macjams….the post was supposed to be an all macjams member collaboration…but people just kept backing off except gary and one member called scorpjammer….so i decided to do the bass lines and rhythm guitars myself and feature both gary and scorpjammer as lead guitarists……wow…gary smoked his parts….passion…passsion…passsion…..thats what i look for in a musician…and thats what gary brings to the table….passion…passsion…passsionate playing…….u can literally sense the smoke emanating from his guitar…..hehhehhe….i have since collaborated on various tracks with him..some will appear on the new album…..and he has not disappointed..no matter what he is presented with he just nails it….i ithink the secret is that he is having…..fun…..he thoroughly enjoys playing…and one can feel it when he plays……i am going to post some clips of his playing at tumblr….Z sample

An afternoon of vocal track recording……

October 10, 2008

” everything counts” is the motto of “Mcboy” the real/virtual band….this past saturday 10/04/08 i had the pleasure of recording a vocal track for my virtual bands album with a most fascinating and talented young woman….her name, and i’m sure its one that i’m convinced will do the rounds in pop music, is antoinette symonette…..she has a talent for lyric writing and singing in various genre’s….i was left speechless after she came over to my studio and wrote the lyrics and sang the song to my composition in 2 hours flat….not an easy task……she gave my composition, originally meant to be an alt-rock leaning song…a complete makeover without me changing a single note or beat….her voice can sound like beyonce to amy winehouse to anything in between, around, above, or below…….my album with 5 tracks already done , is comprised of rock instrumentals and vocal tracks ranging from david bowie like stylings from one singer to red hot chili peppers from another,…ms. symonette adds the female vocalist touch to an otherwise heavy improvisational instrumental band……when she arrived at the studio we discussed what kind of lyrics…the usual..love, hate..hope…..i finally decided to give her artistic freedom and see what she could do lyrically….wowwwww…..she rocked the studio and left me …..um…..speechless…..jaw on the floor…..here is an mp3 of her during the warmup session prelude to recording The Sign

The musical adventure begins………

September 12, 2008

if one is starting an adventure and would like the world to come along for the ride, what better place to begin than with a blog……this is my musical adventure…..i had this idea of forming a band …a virtual band…with members in other places and spaces..to make music, collaborate and initially just to have fun……fun and then the idea to go public became an itch….the musicians are top notch and play different genres….the inspiration came to me from watching and listening to “the spam allstars” in miami… a group of musicians, leaders of bands of different genre’s, grouping to make a band…a successful band at that…..from local to national and now international…..i was having fun collaborating with some musicians at this musicians web site ..www.macjams.com….playing all kinds of music ,learning new genres and having,…well…fun…..the itch came to me when i did a collaboration with bassist andrew kopr from atlanta and guitarist gary wooten from connecticut…the music sounded so good i thought it could go commercial….and so i started to scratch the itch…..my plans for the band, if all goes well, is to create both vocal and instrumental music that incorporates modern rock, pop and jazz sensibilities with much adventure in the sound, mix and playing……to get a taste of the initial instrumental “slingers” go to SLINGERS….and to hear a vocal track go here: DO THAT ………..
